Hair Care: Dos and Don’ts

written by Payal Thaker

My Hair:

I’ve never done any hair posts on my blog?? So far this is true, and I seriously think it’s not fair. So today I’m going to share some special tips: Dos and Don’ts which I follow for my hair…

Let’s Get Started!!!

To begin with, genetically I have very fine wavy hair. Since I was 18, I started coloring and highlighting my hair. And ever since then I’ve always blow dried, straightened, curled, crimped, cut, and done a lot of other things to my hair!

I really love experimenting. Every year I’ve had a different hair cut, style, and color. While I was working as an Air Hostess, I had to tie my hair into bun. And for modelling it was always some crazy hairstyle, which again needed blow dryers, curling tongs, and a straightener.

( Photos taken by Vizz Dalwani at Vizz Creations )

So basically if you like to play with your hair, and if you’re equally crazy like me, then you need to take care of it! That doesn’t mean you have to devote your entire life to looking after your hair. Just do a few correct things in a correct way and I promise, you will have beautiful hair! 😀

1. Always use a shampoo and conditioner which your hair treatment requires. For example, if you’ve colored your hair, then you need to use a shampoo and conditioner made specifically for that particular need; to keep your color lasting longer and make your hair look glossy, all while protecting it from damage.

HairIrons2. Before using any hot iron / curling tong / blow dryer, make sure you first use a serum all over your hair. This will create a thin layer of protection, so your hair won’t get damaged.

3. At least once a week, use a deep cleansing shampoo and conditioner. These will remove all the residue from styling products, as well as any dirt/pollution that has settled on the root of your hair, which sometimes need extra cleansing.

4. Oil your hair once a week. You can use cotton balls for applying hair oil. Dip them in any of your favorite hair oils ( I prefer natural coconut oil ) and apply on the roots of your hair by slightly massaging. Leave it in for 1 to 2 hours, and then wash your hair with your deep cleansing shampoo and conditioner.

5. SPF is not only good for your skin, but it can also benefit your hair. After applying your sunscreen to your face and body, apply a tiny bit on the ends/tips of your hair during the daytime. This will protect your hair from sun damage and also reduce split ends.

6. Find a way to hang your head upside down for a few minutes a day. One way I do this is by laying halfway on my bed, on my stomach, and having my head and chest hanging off the side of the bed. This will get your blood flowing towards your upper body and head, which is considered very good for hair growth and good skin…Trust me this works really well! ( There are also many Yoga poses which are good for promoting hair growth, click here to see )

***Important Note: This is a form of Inversion Therapy, and people who have heart disease, high blood pressure, eye diseases (such as glaucoma), or are pregnant should avoid this step unless you have consulted your doctor.***

1. Oiling is important, but don’t overdo it!! Never leave in oil overnight or go out all day with it in. Oily hair is like a magnet for dirt; it catches it extremely easily. It will make your scalp overly oily, which will then require harsh cleaning to get it all out, resulting in overly dry hair. It will also give you acne, bacne (back acne), and an itchy scalp.

2. While massaging the oil on your scalp, don’t be too rough. Be gentle! Harsh head massages will not do any good, and eventually you will have hair breakage problems.

3. Don’t have a rigid schedule for washing your hair; like only washing hair once every 2 or 3 days. Just give your hair a nice wash whenever you feel it needs it. Cleaning your hair regularly, if it’s required, won’t cause any problems.

Shower4. Never use hot water to wash your hair, use normal temperature water always. Hot water will damage your hair.

5. Never ever use bad quality or cheap hair products for styling. Always make sure the styling products you are using are good quality and used professionally.

6. Avoid using shampoos and conditioners that have too many sulfates. Sulfates lead to over drying, and cause heavy damage to your hair.

Final Words: A lot of people are scared of hair damage and never try anything different with their hair. While staying away from chemical treatments is always a good idea, if you want to try something different then don’t be scared. Just keep the above mentioned points in mind, and I promise you will enjoy your new look!

These are really nice tips Payal. I’ve never heard of the inversion therapy but it sounds cool n now I wanna try it! Can u pls suggest some shampoo for deep cleanse? 🙂

    • YourBeautyPal

Hi Lana! I loooove this therapy!! I do it atleast once a day and it feels so good! The shampoo and conditioner I use for deep cleansing is Rehab by Lush Cosmetics. If you can get your hands on it I would definitely recommend you try that. Apart from Lush I like Paul Mitchell’s deep cleansing shampoo and conditioner.xoxo

  2. brinda shah

Can you suggest good heat protector or serum which is available in India also. And recommendation for shampoo and conditioner for different hair type.

    • YourBeautyPal

Hi Brinda my most loved serum for hair by far is LOREAL professional Mythic Oil. It’s so good and also makes my hair look and feel very good. Xx

    • YourBeautyPal

Also let me tell you girls that I like mixing unfiltered Apple cider vinegar with my shampoo sometimes, it works as a natural deep cleanser and does the job pretty well. (Smells a little) followed by any deep cleansing conditioner. Xxx

  3. Prerna

@Payal : Thanks payal for all the useful tips 🙂
Can you please tell me deep cleansing shampoo nd conditioner? And also how many times a week we should use it?

@Brinda : Hi brinda, you can use Tresemme Heat protector spray. I use it nd its really nice 🙂

  4. pallavi hair is curly, dry nd frizzy pls suggest me wd good shampoo nd conditioner that wud be available in India also let me know as wat i can do to get rid of frizzness

    • YourBeautyPal

Hi Pallavi for your hair condition I would recommend you try the Matrix Biolage ultra hydrating shampoo and conditioner. It will control the frizzeness and hold your curls. Also Dove has some good hair repair shampoo which should work very well as I have tried them myself and I loved it! Always look for shampoo and conditioner which is more hydrating and also if you can go for deep conditioning treatments at home or you can visit any Proffesional hair salon. Deep conditioning will get your hair in good shape and will make them more healthy. Xoxo

  5. apoorva

Which shampoo and conditioner do you recommend?

    • YourBeautyPal

Hi Apoorva it all depends on your hair type and if your hair is chemically treated or not?? What exactly is your concern hun??

    • YourBeautyPal

once a week add freshly squeezed lemon or 1 tbsp of Apple cide vinegar to your shampoo. this will clean your hair thoroughly.

  10. apoorva

Ok I have naturally straight hair, its silky but a Lil rough..too much hair fall though..! 🙁

    • YourBeautyPal

Apoorva try leave in conditioners.. Definitely yo will start noticing the difference. For hairfall I would recommend first get a check up done. It could be many reasons and also start having supplements mainly like multivitamin and Biotin. At Present I take Biotin 500 mg every day for my hair growth and it has helped me a lot. But as I said check with your doctor first. Xx

      • apoorva

Thank you 🙂 I do use leave in conditioner by matrix .

    • YourBeautyPal

Hey Taneyeya thanks hun! For straightning I’m currently using the Toni&Guy straightner and I love it! For curling iron I’m using a lot of different kinds and the ones I like is the Philip curling iron and BabyBliss. Both of them are pretty good and gives good results. For heat protect serum and leave in conditioner I like TIGI products. They are excellent and honestly nothing works better than that! Loreal Mythic Oil serum is amazing if you use it before and after you straighten your hair or just a little on Top of your curls for glossy finish. Xoxo

      • tanyeya

Hey ty so much dear…wud u mind tellin me d approx pric of dese products…n r tigi products available in india…??

        • YourBeautyPal

TIGI products are available online in India. I am not sure if they have a store or they are sold in Proffesional salons but it’s worth checking. Prices are all different so again I would suggest check online for proper info. Xxx

  12. hisbakhan

Hey!!..I hav a lot of dandruff in my hair what should I do?? I hav tired many shampoos also but it didnt work 🙁 … so can you plz suggest what should I do

    • YourBeautyPal

Hi Hisbakhan! Try and wash your hair more frequently, Use slightly warm water at first and later switch to cold water to wash your hair, change your pillow case every night without fail, drink a lot of water, keep your hair comb, accessories clean and sanitize it as much as you can. The best shampoo to fight your dandruff problem according to me would be Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo. It’s one of the best for a problem scalp. Also L’occitane Shampooing Shampoo is pretty good and hopefully will give you good results. Try and avoid using shampoos and conditioners with heavy sulfates in them. Xx

      • Punita

heyy…!!!!! i kinda feel blessed finding ur site…!!! its so helpful…just wanna know i tried finding the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo u recommended but its kinda not available in Mumbai..!!!

        • YourBeautyPal

Hi Punita, I found the Tea Tree Paul Mitchell Shampoo at shoppers stop website. Try ordering it online. For dandruff I would suggest you mix 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar to your shampoo while washing your hair. Also, wash your hair frequently and use fresh towel everytime you dry your hair.

  13. hisbakhan

    • hisbakhan

      • YourBeautyPal

Dear, you need to look after your hair. Eat well and use good products. Get your hair trim in every few weeks. If possible take Biotin supplements once a day. ( consult your doctor) x

        • hisbakhan

          Okie tysm

  14. surabhi saxena

Its really helpful to go through your posts, from the time I’m following you on insta I’m your addict.
I had rebounding last year as a result my hair are now very thin and falling a lot. I want voluminous hair, kindly help me with it.

    • YourBeautyPal

Hi Surabhi, thank you so much for your appreciation dear! Means a lot to me. 🙂

Rebonding can make hair really dry, frizzy and thin. Make sure you trim your hair regularly to avoid split ends, wash your hair with cold water and use deep conditioners or leave in conditioners once a week, get a hair spa done if possible in every 2 weeks, take a break from chemical treatments for sometime and use a good hair oil. I would recommend you try the distil castor oil by Aloe Veda. It’s beyond amazing and will help you get your hair in good shape. You can find it online on snapdeal or Avoid using shampoos and conditioners with too many sulfates. Xx

      • surabhi saxena

        Okay, thank you.
suggest some good deep cleansing shampoo and conditioners if possible. 🙂

        • YourBeautyPal

Try the Paul Mitchell’s claryfying shampoo and conditioner. X

  15. manpreet kohli

    • YourBeautyPal

Hi Manpreet check out the Paul Mitchell’s clarifying shampoo, conditioner. X

  16. salma

Hi, I have dandruff in my hair and even ever I was my hair the next day it turns oily type so I want you to recommend me shampoo and conditioner. And what kind of care I can take for my hair type

    • YourBeautyPal

Hey salma, I would recommend you use any medicated shampoo for your dandruff problem. Apart from that you can also add apple cider vinegar to your regular shampoo atleast once a week when you wash your hair. If you don’t like apple cider vinegar smell you can try adding lemon juice to your shampoo. It will clean your scalp very well and also your hair will look healthy. X

  17. salma

  18. shinu

I am using matrix opti care straighting shampoo for my newly rebonded hair is it is imp to use matrixconditioner or dove conditioner is goood

    • YourBeautyPal

Hey Shinu it’s very important to use post treatment shampoo and conditioner for chemically treated hair or unfortunately you will damage your hair. So if you have rebonded your hair recently you should use products specifically for rebonded/straightening hair. X

  19. aditi shroff

  20. simar

    • YourBeautyPal

Hey Simar try the Loreal Proffessionals Mythic oil serum. It’s very good! X

  21. Anupreet Kaur

    Hi. Nice tips. Thanks.
Can you pls suggest on dry, rough, damaged hair. I am facing all of this. I hate it. I have to oil it everyday to keep it in place. I also use after shampoo conditioner. But my hair is same as it is. I tried egg n coconut oil mixture on my hair once a week. It helped little bit. But not much.. My hair doesn’t even grow much. I have wavy curly hair.
    Pls suggest.

    • YourBeautyPal

Hi Anupreet everything that I follow I’ve mentioned in this post. I would suggest you follow all this and have patience until you see the results. Although I would highly recommend you use deep cleansers and conditioners atleast once a week for a silky soft hair. Squeeze lemon in your shampoo and give your hair a nice wash atleast twice a month. Apply the cold pressed castor oil on to the roots for the hair growth. Hope this will help you. X

      • Anupreet Kaur

        Thanks dear.. Love..

  24. gayatri

Hey can u plz suggest something for premature Greg hair?

    • YourBeautyPal

Hi Gayatri proper hair oiling ( cold pressed or organic) and taking biotin supplements every day before a meal would help. Also I would suggest you consult a doctor for proper treatment.

    • YourBeautyPal

You should try The aloe Veda Distil Castor Oil. Using this hair oil on regular basis will solve your hair fall problem and will also nourish your hair.

  29. Garima

Please tell me your views on hair smoothening. I dont have thick hair, but frizzy so I an thinking to in in for it. Please share your views and its disadvantages He you think.

    • YourBeautyPal

Hi Garima, I would not recommend smoothening hair treatment or any similar treatments for thin or fine hair type. Instead to control frizziness you can invest in some deep conditioning shampoo and conditioner. Also you can try hair spa and do proper hair oiling. Smoothening will make your hair look nice temporary and later it will look flat and really thin.

  30. janvi

Hey loved your post 🙂 btw could you suggest some good hair protectant to use before straightening! And also some tips to thicken my hair ! 🙂

    • YourBeautyPal

  36. Vandana

hey payal.. i really luved ur post.. But i hv very dry damaged n very thin hairs.. they are from.last 5-6 years.. i hv tried everything but nothing works.. 2years before i went to 1 parlour for straightning n trimming n he used to straight my hair directly with straightner every month.. he dont apply any serum or spray.. now they r very rough n short.. i apply egg, warm castor oil wid coconut oil n shikakai soap for washing even i have started doing yoga but still no results.. please suggest some good tips… 🙁

    • YourBeautyPal

Hi Vandana, first of all make sure you don’t use any hot irons, dryers without applying any heat protectant serum. Whatever home remedies you’ve been doing just keep doing them, they will eventually make your hair healthier. Also I would suggest try using shampoos and conditioners which has very less amount of sulphates in them try the Paul Mitchell shampoo, conditioner, The Body Shop banaana shampoo and conditioner or any other you like which has very less sulphates. Also include Biotin supplements in your routine. Take one everyday. It will make your hair grow longer and thicker with time.

  37. Vandana

Even i take good meal regularly.. Fruits vegetables beans everything n from last year homeopathy treatment is also going on but m nt gettng any results. Help 🙁

  38. Vandana

  39. Janwi

Hey Payal, I am getting craze about your blog. I really love your tips and suggestion,. great…:)

  40. komal

thankyou soo much… its really work..

  41. shaheli

Hi!!!I have recently took to your blog n I’m a new subscriber of your vblog..I’m addicted to your posts and videos.. I have naturally straight hair bt its dry and frizzy..recently I am suffering from hair loss.. I have lost volume..I am using dove oil care shampoo and matrix conditioner…what should I do to bring back my volume?? I have very thin hair on the crown area..plzzzz I need your suggestions!!

    • YourBeautyPal

Hi Shaheli, thank you so much for subscribing and I’m so happy you like reading my blog! For your hair problem first i would recommend you stop using oil care shampoo and conditioners. Look for volumizing shampoos and conditioners. Try the Body Shop Rainforest volume shampoo. It’s sillicon free and has no harmful ingredients. It also will repair your hair by adding volume to it. I also like L’Occitane volume shampoo. Apart from that wash your hair with cold water only. Hot water makes scalp sticky and causes hair breakage. Do the Inversion as I’ve mentioned in the post above. Try the loreal hair mask it works good as well. Hope this helps, you can always write to me for more help. Xo

  42. Mahika

Hey. These tips are really very useful. Thank you so much! Btw,I really want to have long and healthy hair and in most of the magazines,I’ve read that trimming doesn’t make the hair grow faster. Is it true?

    • YourBeautyPal

If you don’t trim your hair in short intervals then you’ll end up getting split ends and dry ends and later you will be forced to cut few extra inches. Trimmed hair looks healthier and when you regularly trim your hair the damage is less and so that’s why it’s recommended to trim your hair regularly.

  43. pandaloverxoxo

hey payal! My hair is really frizzy at the tips but oily at the scalp 🙁 Makes it look really limp…also hairfall is one of my main concerns…could you suggest something to make my hair look thicker?
p.s-i take vitamin supplements everyday, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference 🙁

    • YourBeautyPal

Take Biotin supplements 500 mg everyday with your breakfast. You’ll notice the difference in six months. Use shampoo and conditioners with tea tree oil in it. Don’t tie your hair up using elastic bands, use boby pin and make a loose bun. This way your hair won’t break and will stay frizz free.

  44. Swati

Hey Payal!!!! My hair is dry and experiencing severe hair fall. Every place at my home is filled with my hair…Please help

    • YourBeautyPal

Hey Swati, have you tried taking Biotin supplements?? I would highly recommend you try that. 500 mg biotin one per day. Wait until six months to notice any results.

  45. vivi

hi payal can u plz suggest me a gud shampoo for daily wash also can conditioner be used daily?? plz suggest one..

    • YourBeautyPal

Hi Vivi, you can definitely use conditioners on everyday basis. Try the banana shampoo by The Body Shop, it’s amazing!

  46. vivi

i have planned to buy a straightener but mommy say it would spoil my hair.. coz mine is a dry, unhealthy hair. will straightening spoil my hair?? if not.. plz suggest me a straightener

    • YourBeautyPal

Hi Vivi, it’s not very healthy to use straighteners on every day basis but however in today’s time you can use it without damaging your hair much with the help of all sorts of products available in the market. Apply the heat resistant spray all over your hair before using any hot tools on your hair, this way your hair won’t get too dry and damaged. I’ve been using Toni And Guy hair straighteners since last six years and I’m really very happy with it! If you can’t find that then try the Remington straightener, it works good too.

  47. manpreet

hey i loved ur blog n became fan of ur sugestions:-X…. i have done rebounding bt after dat i didn care of my hair too muc .now aftr 1 yr the volume of my hairs hv decreased a lot making it look very thin and dry…being punjbi we dont cut or trim our hairs…my hairs are long enoug bt vry thn n frm past 6 mnth nearly having hug amt f hairfall also. i use herbal mild shampoo. what shuld i do to increse the vol of my hair n my fore head has also becom littl wid becz of such quantifir amt of hairfall. ples suggst somthing dat will bring some nw hairs on my forehd n make the vol large n haan wich are easily avalbl in kolkata…plese help me out…n thans in advance …:-)

    • YourBeautyPal

Hi Manpreet, Anytime you undergo any hair, skin treatments it’s necessary to use the post treatments products for long lasting benefits and for no side effects, I would suggest you start using the professional Shampoo and Conditioner. Using professional hair products will make a big difference because they have no sulfate or very less sulfate in them in compared to the regular commercial shampoo, conditioner. Try the . L’Oreal Professional Serie Expert Force Vector Shampoo and conditioner. This one is my personal favorite for your kind of hair problem. 🙂

  48. Priyanka

heyo payal I read your blog and its quite impressive to see that you reply to everyone hoping you will reply mine too. • YourBeautyPal

Everything that I know or I do personally for my hair is mentioned in this post, But what I can suggest you is that try using shampoos and conditioners with less sulfate or no sulfate. Go for organic brands or brands that don’t use sulfates for their hair products. Also, taking Biotin supplements everyday once a day will show a big difference in long run.

  49. Daniya

Can you suggest some good shampoo having less sulfate content, with respect to its availability in India?

Oiling your hair is good but if your hair is chemically treated then you must avoid doing it as often. Just do it once in few weeks by applying a little oil on the scalp and massaging it for few min, wash it asap before it statrts penetrating in your hair.

Hi. I’ve been reading your blog since quite long now. You’ve mentioned about using Shampoos with tea tree oil. I’ve been using Clinic Plus Shampoo since I was 5 maybe! Never used conditioner as such. It’s only done ocassionally.
However, since my hair have lost a bit of volume and have turned a bit rough and frizzy, I’ve become a lil worried. I have long hair, no chemical treatment’s been done.

What is your advice on this? Should I look for some other shampoo? Or use conditioner more often?

what can I do to remove split ends..?

    • YourBeautyPal

Split ends are result of poor hair care routine. if you are using hot tools on a regular basis then you must make sure you are applying heat protection spray or serum every time you using them, If you have colored your hair then again you must use shampoo, conditioner and leave in conditioner for color treated hair. Apply cold pressed hair oil and take biotin supplements to strengthen your hair from the roots.
